A GOOD START FOR BAM PLAYERS IN AUSTRALIA

The XIAMENAIR Australian Badminton Open was indeed a good start for BAM players as they advanced to the second round.

Tee Jing Yi, Goh Jin Wei and Iskandar Zulkarnain were all successful in their first round match. However, the highlight was once again on the youngest player for Malaysia, Goh Jin Wei who created an upset against the more experienced Michelle Li of Canada who is currently ranked No. 21 in the world.

Jin We who is playing in her first superseries tournament is certainly heading in the right path as the Penangite who was ranked out of top 100 last year is now in the 58th position and a good show here in Sydney will give her the opportunity to improve in her world rankings.

Although she has an uphill task against 2012 Olympic bronze medalist, Saina Nehwal in the second round tomorrow, the world junior champion is going all out to defeat her Indian opponent as she almost overcame world No. 1, Carolina Marin during the Uber Cup championships two weeks ago.

As for Tee Jing Yi, she faces the skillful Tai Tzu Ying who was also the winner of last week’s Indonesia Open. The players have met twice with the last two meetings siding the Taiwanese. However, Jing Yi is always full of surprises and she may turn the tables around.

The mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying and Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing did not face much trouble playing against local pairs. It was also good news for V Shem/Wee Kiong and Indonesia Open semi-finalist Vivian/Khe Wei when they advanced to the second round.

In the men’s singles, Iskandar overcame Brice Leverdez of France and awaiting him is Sho Sasaki of Japan. The Malaysian had defeated Sasaki during the Chinese Taipei Open last year and the match is expected to be an exciting one. Joining him is also independent shuttler, Zulfadli Zulkifli who defeated Anthony Joe of Australia in the first round today.
