A HARD FOUGHT VICTORY FOR SOON HUAT

Malaysia’ singles shuttler, Goh Soon Huat had to dig deep before prevailing against Joachim Person of Denmark to check into the semi-finals of the Yonex Dutch Open Grand Prix. He defeated the Dane 21/12, 20/22, 22/20 in a match that lasted for an hour. However, he has an uphill task against his next opponent, Ajay Jayram of India who overcome Malaysia’s Iskandar Zulkarnain yesterday evening.

Ajay has been enjoying a good outing beginning at the Victor Korea Open Superseries two weeks ago. He was a giant killer defeating Viktor Axelsen and Chen Chou Tien who are ranked very much higher than him to qualify for the finals of the Superseries event. Moreover, he was the lone survivor among three other teammates who went down in the first round of the same tournament.

Thus, it will not be easy for the 25 year-old Soon Huat when he play against Ajay although it is possible for him to take on the Indian later tonight for a place in the finals. Apart from Soon Huat, two other singles shuttlers failed to progress to the semi-finals.

Iskandar who lost to Ajay Jayram did put up a good show losing to the latter in three games, however, Soo Teck Zhi went down tamely to Emil Holst of Denmark, 5/21, 12/21. In the mens’ doubles, there were good news for former nationals, Koo Kien Keat/ Tan Boon Heong who made it to the semi-finals and they face Lee Jhe-Huei/ Lee Yang of Chinese Taipei today.
