CHONG WEI OVERCOMES SUPERSERIES JINX IN FRANCE

After going through three early exits beginning from the Japan Open, followed with the Korea Open and last week’ Denmark Open, top national singles shuttler, Lee Chong Wei has checked into the quarter-finals of the Yonex French Open after defeating youngster, Viktor Axelsen of Denmark yesterday.

Although the former world number one lost his first game to the Dane, he was quick to bounce back in the second and third winning the match 12/21, 21/17, 21/14. There is a possibility that Chong Wei may have lost the first game not very sure of the youngster’s style of play since the last time they were against each other was more than a year ago. Moreover, the 2010 World Junior champion has improved a lot.

However, as said, being the more experienced player, it did not take long for the Olympic silver medalist to recover from the defeat to thrash him in the next two games. The win yesterday has surely given Chong Wei the extra boost of motivation he needed to continue to stay focus in his next matches. He is expected to triumph against Sho Sasaki of Japan tonight to meet either Wang Zhengming of China or Rajiv Ouseph of England in the semi-finals tomorrow.

Although Chong Wei’s win came as a good news, teammates, V Shem/ Wee Kiong and Tee Jing Yee were shown the exit yesterday. The duo lost to Kim Sa Rang/ Kim Gi Jung, 11/21, 18/21 while Tee Jing Yee could not get the better of her Indonesian opponent, Maria Febe Kusumastuti, losing the match in three games, 17/21, 21/8, 21/14. Former internationals, Koo Kien Keat/ Tan Boon Heong were also beaten by Japanese pair, Kenichi Hayakawa/ Hiroyuki Endo, 14/21, 21/19, 21/16.
