CHONG WEI, TWO DOUBLES PAIRS START STRONG

NEW DELHI: Datuk Lee Chong Wei had a great start to his campaign in the USD300,000 India Open SuperSeries with a convincing 21-11, 21-17 win over Japanese qualifier Kazumasa Sakai in the first round here yesterday.

 

After going down tamely in the first, Kazumasa gave the topseeded Malaysian ace a fight in the second tie. Both players were level at 8-8 but then Chong Wei pulled away with three straight points. The Japanese battled back and caught up at 15-16 before Chong Wei raced away to seal the match in under 40 minutes.

 

He will face Hong Kong's Wei Nam in the next round for a place in the quarter-finals. Wei Nan had a tough encounter before beating Thai veteran, Boonsak Ponsana 16-21, 21-15, 21-18. Meanwhile, China's Lin Dan Lin advanced to the second round after beating India's Sourabh Varma (21-18, 21-9.

 

In the men's doubles, national No 1 pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, took the fight to their opponents in the first round and prevailed 21-19, 21-18 over Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen, the eighth seeds, in 31 minutes. They will face Chinese pair, Wang Yilyu-Zhang Wen, in the next round.

 

Another Malaysian pair, Hoon Thien How and Teo Kok Siang turned in a smashing performance to defeat China's Liu Cheng-Lu Kai (21-14, 15-21, 21-18 in a tie that lasted 50 minutes. The Malaysian duo will take on South Koreans Hyun Ko Sung-Cheol Shin Baek, the fifth seeds, next.

 

Another Malaysian pair, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, ranked No 16, were knocked out in the first round when they fell to 12-21, 21-23 to South Koreans, Kim Gi-jung-Kim Sa-rang, the second seeds here, in 36 minutes.
