PENG SOON/ LIU YING FALTERS, V SHEM/ WEE KIONG MARCHES ON

Malaysia’s top mixed doubles pair, Chan Peng Soon/ Goh Liu Ying were shown the exit yesterday by Koreans, Solgyu Choi/ Eom Hye Won, 21/17, 21/19 at the 2015 K&D Graphics Yonex Grand Prix. The competition that is being held at the Orange County Badminton Club in California is one of the venues that provides valuable points for players to qualify for next year’s Rio Olympics. Peng Soon/ Liu Ying played well but it was certainly not enough to prevail against the Koreans.

According to their coach, Chin Eei Hui who is currently with the players, there were certain shots they were unable to handle due to the pressure.

“Peng Soon/ Liu Ying are ranked very much higher than their opponents and the fact that they should not lose this match created the unwanted pressure and affected their game. Despite the lost, the players performed better compared to the tournaments they competed in Europe last month. They have also been progressing since the Hong Kong Open Superseries and Macau Open Grand Prix,” said Eei Hui from California.

In the mens’ doubles, Tan Wee Kiong/ Goh V Shem continued their fine run to enter the semi-finals after defeating fifth seed, Marcus Ellis/ Chris Langridge of England, 21/18, 21/16. It has been a while since the 2014 Asian Games bronze medalist played in the semi-finals. The last time was in July when they lost in the finals of the Russian Open Grand Prix. The pair faces Chen Hung Ling/ Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei tomorrow for a place in the finals.
