SINGLES PLAYERS MAKE IT TO THE QUARTERS IN SURABYA

The second day at the Victor Indonesia International Challenge was a bitter sweet day as three singles players made it to the quarter-finals whereas, there were no representatives in the doubles department. Liew Daren was made to slog against 20 year old Pannawit Thongnuam of Thailand before defeating the latter, 21/14, 18/21, 21/8. Tech Zhi had no problem disposing his opponent from Korea, Lee Hong Je in two games. The other victory came from womens’ singles shuttler, Tee Jing Yi who overcame last week’s Singapore Intenational Series runner-up, Yeo Jia Min of Singapore, 21/12, 21/18.

Daren will face Jeon Hyeok Jin of Korea in the quarter-finals. The Korean has improved in his ranking beginning the year in 189 and, currently he is ranked 60 in the world. He emerged as champion in the Osaka International Challenge Badminton Championship and runner-up at the Yonex Sunrise Malaysia Masters this year. The 28 year-old Daren may have to go through the hard way to overcome the youngster, nevertheless, with his vast experience, Daren should be able to get pass the Korean.

Soo Teck Zhi will take on Firman Abdul Kholik. The duo have played once against each other during the Maybank Malaysia Kuching International Challenge last year and Teck Zhi was the winner. National top womens’ singles, Tee Jing Yi will be up against a lower ranked player, Rusydina Antardayu Riodingin and a win will see her playing with either Liang Xiaoyu or Kim Na Young who upset top seed, Hana Ramadhini in the second round.
