A BITTER SWEET DAY FOR MALAYSIANS AT WUHAN,CHINA

It was a bitter sweet day for Malaysia at the Dong Feng Citroen Badminton Asia Championships 2016; former world No. 1, Lee Chong Wei cleared the first hurdle but the top men’s and mixed doubles pair saw defeats.

Chong Wei cruised to the next round after disposing Wang Zheng Ming of China 21/16, 21/14 while Wee Kiong/ V Shem suffered a shocking defeat to unheralded Singaporeans, Terry Hee Yong Kai/ Loh Kean Hean in three games; 18/21, 23/21, 21/19.

The Malaysians, currently ranked No. 13 in the world, will have to pray hard that the loss today will not jeopardize their chances of qualifying for the Rio Olympics as the qualifying period ends this month.

In the mixed doubles event, the much improved Chan Peng Soon/ Goh Liu Ying pair although favoured to advance to the next stage, were beaten by Shin Baek Cheol/ Chae Yoo Jung of Korea, 18/21, 21/18, 16/21 in a match that lasted for more than an hour.

However, the upcoming pair of Tan Kian Meng/ Lai Pei Jing had an amazing start after stunning world No. 18, Kenta Kazuno/ Ayane Kurihara of Japan in straight games. The Malaysians will be next up against top seed and Olympics champions, Zhang Nan/ Zhou Yun Lei tomorrow.

Vivian Hoo/ Woon Khe Wei on the other hand received a walk over by Tang Yuanting/ Yu Yang of China after it was reported that Yu Yang had suffered an injury.

As for women’s singles, despite losing her match to Wang Yihan, who is the 2011 world champion, Tee Jing Yee played with confidence and managed to stretch the Olympic silver medalist to three games. Goh Jin Wei and Ho Yen Mei were also shown the exit after they lost their matches respectively. Goh Jin Wei lost a close match to Akane Yamaguchi whereas Ho Yen Mei was shown the exit by Ratchanok Intanon.
