It is not surprising to see Amelia Alicia Anscelly marching into the women’s doubles finals of the Celcom Axiata National Circuit First Leg. However, the 2015 SEA Games champion is not with her usual partner, Soong Fie Cho, instead, Amelia has been given the task to partner a junior player, Teoh Mei Xing.
The reason for the change in her partnership was after her partner, Fie Cho injured her knee during the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold and that was not it, she had to go for a knee surgery immediately.
It was a difficult time for both Amelia and Fie Cho especially having to accept the fact that their Olympic dream has come to an end. Despite the heartbreaking news, her passion for the sports motivated her to stay in the team, hence a new partner as well.
“Mei Xing is still learning and initially, she was very nervous to partner me and I understood how she felt because when I was younger, I felt the same when I was told by my coach to partner a senior player.”
“So, I knew that it was my turn to assure her that it is normal to feel that way but at the same time, she has to overcome the fear in order to play well and I am glad that she did it today. This is our first tournament together and it sure is a good feeling to be in the finals,” said Amelia after her match.
Amelia’s new partner, Mei Xing is nine years younger to her and they face Lee Meng Yean/Chow Mei Kuan in the finals tomorrow. The pair will then leave for Hanoi on Sunday morning to compete in the Vietnam Interntional Challenge.
In the men’s singles, Chong Wei Feng had to play one game only before Liew Daren decided to retire due to a leg injury. Zulfadli Zulkifli was the next player to concede a walkover after suffering a knee injury two days ago. Wei Feng will now meet former national, Goh Giap Chin in the finals.
As for the men’s doubles, Teo Ee Yi/Ong Yew Sin continued their fine run to march into the finals and the pair will play against Mohd Zakry Ab Latif/Hafizi Hashim who received yet another walkover from Hoon Thien Hoe/ Teo Kok Siang after it was told that Kok Siang was down with a fever.
There were also no surprises in the women’s singles department when favourites, Tee Jing Yi and Goh Jin Wei defeated Lee Ying Ying and Lim Chiew Sien respectively for a place in the finals.
