Ooi Jhy Dar is a 14 year-old student from Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS). He is currently a national junior badminton player who hails from Alor Setar, Kedah. He started playing badminton at the age of seven back at his hometown in Kedah. During his free time, he loves listening to music and reading Chinese story books.

Jhy Dar became very interested in badminton after watching his idols, Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan on television. He was inspired by their achievements, victories and he aspired to be like them someday. Moreover, he had his family to support him all the way. His dad is a hardware shop owner while his mom helps his dad in the business.

“I am grateful to my parents for encouraging me to pursue my interest in badminton despite knowing the fact that it may require their time and financial support especially when it comes to sending me for trainings and purchasing badminton equipment”.

I started improving and my parents continued sending me for training at the Kedah Badminton Association. My biggest breakthrough came when I became the national Under-12 champion in singles and doubles. I felt that my parents’ sacrifice did not go in vain”, said Jhy Dar when met at the Juara Stadium.

A few weeks later, he was called up by BAM to join the selection trials for a place at BJSS and as expected, he was one of the best players and eventually was roped into the sports school last year. It was not an easy decision for the Kedah born player who was also a studious boy in school. He scored 5A’s and 2B’s in his UPSR exams but his desire of becoming a successful badminton player was more than enough to bring him to Kuala Lumpur to pursue his dreams.

He currently trains under former national player, Mohd Hazwan who is the coach in BJSS. When asked if he misses his parents, he said, “I do miss them but we speak on the phone every day and they visit me every two months once, so that helps me a lot. My parents believe that I am able to study and train hard at the same time and I want to make them proud by proving that I can do it”.
