National men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi sprung a surprise over the current World No.3 ranked pair, Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen in the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2018 which opened its doors today at Axiata Arena, KL Sports City.
Ee Yi-Yew Sin upset the experienced Danish pair 21-17, 18-21, 21-31 to move into the second round on Thursday.
“Unbelievable. We are actually shocked that we won today. Initially we targeted a strong performance, but the win feels even better,” said Ee Yi.
He added, “They managed to disrupt our momentum in the second set but with the backing and support of the home crowd, we managed to pull through.”
Rising star, Goh Jin Wei first took to the courts today as she overcame Pai Yu Po of Chinese Taipei in straight sets 21-13 21-17.
Datuk Lee Chong Wei then continued the cheers for the local fans at Axiata Arena when he only needed 33 minutes to despatch Japan's Kazumasa Sakai 21-13, 21-10.
The World no.6 ranked player revealed that he needed some time to find his groove and hopes to continue this momentum in the second round where he will meet South Korea's Lee Hyun Ill on Thursday.
He said, “The first 11 points were tough to get as I was still looking for my rhythm but it was all smooth sailing from then on with my confidence growing especially in the second set.”
“With a break tomorrow, I hope that I can continue with the same intensity especially with so many talented young players competing this year,” he added.
Another two national men’s double pairs managed to secure spots in the next round with Aaron Chia-Wooi Yik Soh overcoming American pair Phillip Chew-Ryan Chew 21-16, 21-15; and Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong triumphing over from Tinn Isriyanet-Kittisak Namdash from Thailand 21-15, 21-10.
