What a great way to start the month of June!
Malaysia’s national hero, Lee Chong Wei has not only won a record 6th Indonesia Open title but regained his world No.1 spot in the world rankings.
He defeated Jan O Jorgensen in the finals today of the BCA Indonesia Open Superseries Premier and pocketed US67,500 for his efforts. The match was a thrilling one with the first game going to Jorgensen.
The title almost slipped away from Chong Wei when the Danish was leading 19-17 in the second game, however, the Malaysian determined to win the title managed to speed up and win the game 21-19.
The final game was not an easy one as well but after Jorgensen making a number of unforced errors, Chong Wei was in a good lead of 20-15 before winning the game 21-17. When asked on his 6th title, he was more focused on thanking his fans for being with him throughout his badminton career.
“I definitely want to thank my fans for supporting me all the way and I’m feeling so happy to have won this title for the sixth time along Indonesia greats like Ardy Wiranata and Taufik,” said the delighted Chong Wei.
The two-time Olympic silver medalist had also won the title in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.
It is also not surprising for the Malaysian to be in the top spot after his remarkable wins beginning last October when he won back to back titles at the French Open, followed by China and Hong Kong Open.
That was not all, he continued his winning streak this year at the Malaysia Masters, Malaysia Open and the Badminton Asia Championships.
Chong Wei will now leave for Sydney to compete in the Australia Open Superseries where he faces Jonathan Christie of Indonesia in the first round.
