Independent shuttlers, Liew Daren, Soong Joo Ven, Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying checked in for national duty at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM), this morning.
All eight players underwent swab tests and are expected to observe a period of self-isolation for approximately two days before gaining clearance to join the rest of the squad.
Director of Coaching, Wong Choong Hann: “I believe we are selecting among the best candidates in the country for our potential final Thomas Cup & Uber Cup squad. That’s why we wanted to start our preparations earlier, and also give us coaches more time to evaluate the progress of the players so we could make the best decisions for the team.
“These players will join our training sessions to allow us to evaluate their current condition, and of course we will change accordingly to bring the best out of them.
“There are two ongoing programs during this call-up – Road to Tokyo (RTT) for Peng Soon-Liu Ying who’ll train with us twice per week (as of now) while the others are for the Thomas Cup & Uber Cup preparations.
“We have good facilities here in ABM, good support system in terms of coaching and support services, we believe that with this platform we’ll be able to push everyone’s limits and add value to the whole setup.
“With a strong systematic program in place, we’ll be able to extract the best out of all and create a good synergy between the young players – full of energy, who want to prove themselves and gain experience from their more experienced teammates. With this collaboration, everyone will get what they wanted. The biggest winner will be team Malaysia.”
