JOO VEN UPSETS SECOND SEED, DEREK WONG

Soong Joo Ven, the 2013 Asian Junior runner-up sprang another upset against the more experienced Derek Wong Zi Liang of Singapore during the third round of the Maybank Malaysia International Challenge Badminton Championship. Joo Ven who began training with the senior squad last year was happy with his performance.

“I just wanted to play my best and stay focused knowing that Derek has more experience than me. It was not easy playing against him but I believed that my game was consistent and I did not make too many errors. Although I am happy with my game today, it is still in the early rounds and I hope that I’ll be able to continue playing well,” said Joo Ven at the Kedah Badminton Hall.

Joo Ven will next meet Andre Marteen of Indonesia tomorrow and joining him are Iskandar Zulkarnain, Chong Yee Han and former national, Tan Chun Seang. In the womens’ singles, Ho Yen Mei will be the only representative after the defeat of her teammates, Lim Yin Fun and Lim Chiew Sien to their Indonesian opponents this afternoon.

However, there were good news in the doubles department as four pairs from the womens’ doubles and three pairs from the boys’ doubles made it to the quarter-finals. Chooi Kah Ming/ Ow Yao Han had a nail bitting match against Chinese Taipei before eventually winning 21/18, 14/21, 24/22. . They duo faces teammates, Low Juan Shen/ Ong Yew Sin tomorrow evening.

In the mixed doubles, scratch pairs, Tan Kian Meng/ Lai Pei Jing and Tan Chee Tean/ Chow Mei Kuan have been performing above expectation despite being paired up just few weeks ago.
