PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Leong Jun Hao lived up to his top billing by clinching the boys’ singles title in the first leg of the National Junior Championships in Penang.

The 18-year-old proved too strong for Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) trainee Ng Tze Yong, winning 21-13, 21-6 in just 28 minutes yesterday.

It was a fruitful outing for the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) shuttlers as they also bagged three other titles.

In the women’s singles, S. Kisona defeated training partner M. Thinaah 21-19, 21-17 while Eng Sin Jou-Eoon Qi Xuan won the girls’ doubles crown by beating Penang’s Goh Yi Xuan-Lee Shun Mei 21-18, 21-13.

German Junior Open winners Chang Yee Jun-Pearly Tan then upset second seeds Ooi Zi Heng of Kedah and Payee Lim Peiy Yee of Selangor 18-21, 21-15, 21-18 for the mixed doubles title.

National discard Zi Heng, however, had the last laugh as he partnered Selangor’s Zainal Abidin Syazmil Idham to clinch the boys’ doubles title.

They defeated third seeds Gunsalam Seddrick Awyn-Mohd Shahriman Amir 23-21, 21-18 in 35 minutes.
