The first day of the BWF World Junior Championships individual event began yesterday at the Centro De Alto Rendimiento “La Videna” stadium in Lima, Peru. Malaysia came in fifth in the team event last weekend after beating Thailand, 3-1 in the 5th and 6th playoff. Except for girls’ singles Ng Qi Xuan, and mixed doubles pair, Soh Wooi Yik/ Anna Cheong, the others made it pass the first round.
Qi Xuan lost to Lee Yu Rim of Korea while Soh Wooi Yik/ Anna Cheong could not get the better of Hon Li Kuen/ Ting Yeung Nga of Hong Kong China in the second round. The others who made it were boys’ singles Lee Zii Jia, R. Satheishtharan and Yeoh Seng Zoe. Cheam June Wei, the second seed of the tournament reeived a first round bye and he faces Macau’s U Ieong Iek in the second round today.
In the girls’ singles, Lee Ying Ying and M. Thinaah were through to the next round while fourth seed, Jin Wei had a bye in the first round. The 15 year-old Jin Wei has a challenging draw in her third round where she is expected to play against Shim Ye Rim of Korea and Indonesia’s Jauza Fadhila Sugiarto, daughter of the 1983 world champion, Icuk Sugiarto and the younger sister of world no. 11, Tommy Sugiorto in the fourth round.
