MALAYSIA’S HOPE LIES ON V SHEM/ WEE KIONG AT ALL ENGLAND

It was a disappointing day for the Malaysian team when top singles players, Lee Chong Wei, Tee Jing Yi and mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon/ Goh Liu Ying crashed out in the first round of the Yonex All England Open in Birmingham early this morning. However, Malaysia still has hope on top mens’ doubles pair, Goh V Shem/ Tan Wee Kiong and independent shuttlers, Koo Kien Keat/ Tan Boon Heong.

World No.2, Chong Wei suffered a shocking defeat to Sai Praneeth of India 22/24, 20/22 in straight games. As for Peng Soon/ Liu Ying, they were also unable to get the better of Korean pair, Ko Sung Hyun/ Kim Ha Na although the Malaysians were leading 20-19 in the deciding game. The pair eventually lost 20-22 to the Koreans.

Hopes will be now on V Shem/ Wee Kiong to make it to the quarter-finals when they meet Chai Biao/ Hong Wei of China later tonight for a place in the quarter-finals. The had earlier beaten Thai pair, Bodin Issara/ Nipitphon Puangpuapech in three games, 16/21, 21/13, 21/9.

The 2014 Commonwealth champions have a head to head record of 2-2 and the last match was won by V Shem/ Wee Kiong just last week at the second round of the German Open.

If the pair makes it to the next round, they are expected to face seniors, Koo Kien Keat/ Tan Boon Heong or two time world champion, Hendra Setiawan/ Mohammad Ahsan of Indonesia to book a place in the last four.
