This is only their very first tournament together and yet, they have made it big considering they are a new pair when they sent the top seed packing in the first round of the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold. Low Juan Shen/ Tan Kian Meng who had to work hard to qualify for the main draw were outstanding today when they disposed world No. 9, Liu Xiaolong/ Qiu Zihan of China in straight games, 21/19, 21/14. The Chinese pair were also the runner-up at this year’s World Championships in Jakarta.

Juan Shen/ Kian Meng will next meet the winner between Peter Gabriel Magnaye/ Paul Jefferson Vivas of Philippines or 2008 Olympic champion, Markis Kido and his partner, Hendra Aprida Gunawan. However, unlike his partner, Kian Meng is competing in two events and he has a new partner, Lai Pei Jing in the mixed doubles. That also means, he has a double task in Macau. The first time they partnered was two weeks ago during the Maybank Malaysia International Challenge where they reached the quarter-finals stage. Tonight, they face fourth seed, Eddy Subaktiar/ Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja of Indonesia in the first round.

In the mens’ singles, Goh Soon Huat who had earlier pulled off another upset against Thai hero, Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk continued his fine run in the mens’ singles challenge when he defeated Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong China, 21/18, 21/15. He stands a good chance to make it to the quarter-finals when he faces Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei in the third round tomorrow.

In the absence of national No. 1, Lee Chong Wei who pulled out last week and the defeat of Chong Wei Feng today, Goh Soon Huat is the only survivor in the mens’ singles. Wei Feng was beaten by Chinese player, Qiao Bin, 21/16, 21/8 in the second round.

As for the mens’ doubles, Chooi Kah Ming/ Ow Yao Han and Ong Yew Sin/ Teo Ee Yi will competing later tonight while womens’ doubles, Lai Pei Jing/ Chow Mei Kuan have marched into the second round after beating their opponents from China.
