KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia have been handed a favourable draw for the Sudirman Cup that is to be held in Gold Coast, Australia from May 21-28.
Malaysia, seeded fifth, are drawn together with fourth seeds Japan and England in Group C.
Defending champions China, who are targeting their 11th title, are in Group A together with Thailand and Hong Kong.
Second seeds Denmark are in Group D with Indonesia and India while third seeds South Korea are drawn with Taiwan and Russia in Group B.
"I believe it's a fair draw for us but we also have a good chance of making the semi-finals," said Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost.
"It would be great if we can top our group because that would give us a better chance of getting a favourable draw in the quarter-finals.
"Japan are overwhelmingly strong in women's singles and doubles but I believe our men's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles can do the job," added Frost.
Malaysia have only made the semi-finals once - in 2009 - since the Sudirman Cup's inception in 1989.
In the 2015 edition, they were knocked out by South Korea in the quarter-finals.
