PETALING JAYA: Malaysia got off to a flying start at the Sudirman Cup in Gold Coast, Australia by checking into the quarter-finals.
On Tuesday, the team led by world No. 1 Datuk Lee Chong Wei (pic) crushed Germany 5-0 in a Group C tie at the Gold Coast Leisure and Sports Centre.
Mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing started the ball rolling by winning the first point with a sensational 21-17, 21-13 win over Mark Lamsfuss-Isabel Herttrich.
Chong Wei put Malaysia into a comfortable 2-0 lead with a convincing 21-12, 21-11 win against Fabian Roth in just 34 minutes.
Malaysia also won three other matches in straight games through Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong (men's doubles), Goh Jin Wei (women's singles) and Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei (women's doubles).
On Wednesday, Malaysia will take on Japan, which beat Germany 4-1 on Sunday. If Malaysia win that tie, they will enter the quarter-finals as Group C champions.
