MALAYSIA WENT DOWN FIGHTING IN THOMAS CUP QUARTERFINALS

Malaysia went down fighting to long-time rivals, Indonesia 1-3 in a pulsating quarterfinals encounter at IMPACT Arena, Muang Thong Thani last night.

Skipper, Datuk Lee Chong Wei led by example defeating opponent 15 years junior, Anthony Ginting 21-19, 21-16. It was Chong Wei’s second successive win over Ginting after defeating the youngster at Asian Badminton Championships, last month.

However, V Shem-Wee Kiong, Lee Zii Jia and Aaron Chia-Teo Ee Yi all were defeated in respective rubber set battles.

V Shem-Wee Kiong were not able to double the lead after going down 19-21, 22-20, 13-21 in a 55-minute duel to world No. 1 Marcus Gideon-Kevin Sukamuljo. 20-year-old Lee Zii Jia’s determined efforts on the other hand were undone by Kuala Lumpur SEA Games champion, Jonatan Christie 15-21 21-11 13-21.

Scratch pair, Aaron Chia-Teo Ee Yi were stopped 18-21 21-10 9-21 by Fajar Alfian-Muhd Rian Ardianto to signal the end of Malaysia’s challenge in this year’s Thomas Cup edition.
