Despite going through a tough year, top mixed doubles pair, Chan Peng Soon/ Goh Liu Ying was successful especially in their last tournament of the year, the Mexico City Grand Prix. In yesterday’s final, they avenged their defeat against Solgyu Choi/ Eom Hye Won of Korea 21/12, 21/14 to clinch the title. They had previously lost to this pair during the quarter-finals of the K&D Graphics Yonex Grand Prix held in California last week.
Peng Soon/ Liu Ying who teamed up again after almost ten months were not going to let this title slip away knowing that they have come a long way to even reach a world ranking of No. 17. Liu Ying had to recover from a knee surgery that caused the pair who were then ranked in the top ten to fall out of the top 100. According to the duo, they were more prepared against the Koreans today.
“We discussed with our coach, Chin Eei Hui and studied their game after our defeat last week. We spoke on our weak points and what we had to change in terms of our strategy when we play against them for the second time. The speed of the shuttle was also quite fast today, so both pairs did not want to open the game too much with too many high shots. We had to focus more on the net shots instead. Fortunately, we had a better control giving us the lead and eventually winning both games,” said Peng Soon and Liu Ying from Mexico.
Overall, it was a good performance by the Malaysians with national top mens’ doubles pair, Goh V Shem/ Tan Wee Kiong clinching the K&D Graphics Yonex Grand Prix title last week and they were also the semi-finalist in Mexico this week alongside teammates, Vivian Hoo/ Woon Khe Wei.
