The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) only sent four players to compete at the 2015 K&D Graphics Yonex Grand Prix knowing that they are the best players and they need to collect as many points as they can to qualify for next year’s Rio Olympics. Peng Soon/ Liu Ying and V Shem/ Wee Kiong left last week to compete in their very first US tournament. The players in return proved that BAM was right in sending them for this tournament despite the long journey and the fact that Malaysia do not usually send players to US. Both pairs checked into the quarter-finals yesterday evening to keep their hopes alive in California.
Although they won their match, Peng Soon/ Liu Ying survived a scare by unseeded pair, Fran Kurniawan/ Komala Devi of Indonesia when they almost lost the match in three games. They won the first game easily, 21/12 but the second game was point to point and the duo eventually lost 19/21. The third game was equally nerve-wracking with both pairs battling every single point. However, Peng Soon/ Liu Ying were the winners in the end defeating their opponents, 27/25. The pair will next face Koreans, Solgyu Choi/ Eom Hye Won.
As for V Shem/ Wee Kiong, they had a smooth sail from the first round. In yesterday’s match, the 2014 Commonwealth champions defeated Job Castillo/ Lino Munoz of Mexico, 21/6, 21/11 in the second round to set up a quarter-final meeting against fifth seed, Marcus Ellis/ Chris Langridge of England. Both pairs will meet for the first time tomorrow and expectations are on favorites, V Shem/ Wee Kiong to win the match.
