The morning session of the BAM National Junior Circuit Grand Prix Finals ended with good results as well as some unexpected defeats for the players from Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).

Reigning champion from the Under-16 category, Ng Qi Xuan kept her hopes alive in the girls’ singles after winning all her group matches. The BJSS player is hoping to make it to the finals although she has an uphill task if she enters the semi-finals.

However, Muhammad Syafiq Iqbal, who was the U-16 boys’ singles champion last year did not enjoy the same fate in the U-18 category as he was beaten by Goh Ting Yu of Sabah in a close match, thus failing to top the group and making it to the quarter-finals. Despite the loss, Syafiq is aware that he is only 17 and he still has another year ahead of him.

“I am quite disappointed that I lost today because it was a close match and I could have won. I was quite nervous and made many unforced errors. I will however come back stronger next year as I will be 18 and there is no excuse for me to perform otherwise,” said Syafiq at the Cheras Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

In the U-14 girls’ singles, K. Letshanaa continued her fine run to top Group H despite just being 13 years old. The Selangor born lass who won the U-12 girls singles title last year is hoping to upset more senior players when she plays in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
