Ranked behind his teammate Cheam June Wei in the world junior rankings, R. Sathiestharan is hoping to stamp his mark at the BWF World Junior Championships (WJC) held in Lima, Peru. Currently ranked No.12, Sathiesh has been training with the national team throughout this year under the guidance of two coaches, Hendrawan and Tey Seu Bock.

During the team event of WJC, Satheish was given the chance to play against Hong Kong China in the 5th – 8th playoff and no doubts, he proved his capabilities on court by winning the match in straight games. In the individual event, he has thus far made it to the third round where he is expected to prevail against Diego Mini of Peru to either meet Japanese youngster, Kenya Mitsuhashi or Toma Junior Popov of France in the fourth round.

“I really hope that I will be able to play my best and surpass the fourth round in this competition. My target is to reach the semi-finals and I will work hard to achieve it. Besides, I want to make my parents proud knowing that they have sacrificed a lot for me in terms of badminton. Moreover, I could not celebrate Deepavali with my family this year. Doing well in my final WJC will surely be a great gift to for my parents,” said the 2015 German Junior champion.

In the girls’ singles, Lee Ying Ying pulled off an upset when she defeated third seed, Supanida Katethong of Thailand in straight games. She later went to win against Yaelle Hoyaux of France to make it to the fourth round where she will be up against Clara Azurmendi of Spain. Ying Ying who had previously lost to Jamis Hsu of USA in the team event was dejected after the defeat. However, instead of letting it demotivate her, she took the defeat as a challenge and she has proven it by coming back stronger in the individual event. Goh Jin Wei also joined Ying Ying in the next round, but M. Thinaah faltered in the second round to Julie Dawall Jakobsen of Denmark.

As for the doubles department, boys’ doubles, Goh Sze Fei/ Tan Jinn Hwa, Aaron Chia/ Soh Wooi Yik and mixed doubles pair of Goh Sze Fei/ Teoh Mei Xing have all progressed to the net round.
