The second day of the Celcom Axiata National Circuit was indeed an exciting day especially in the Division 1 category when former national players competed against their juniors.
However, there was one very special match that caught the eye of the badminton fans at Juara Stadium tonight. Mohd Zakry Ab Latif, the 2009 World Championship bronze medalist and his partner, Muhd Hafizi Hashim did not just play against any opponent but their respective siblings.
Their opponents were Zakry’s younger brother, Mohd Razif Ab Latif who is also a former national player and Hafizi’s elder brother and 2003, All England champion, Mohd Hafiz Hashim.
When asked on how he felt playing against his brother, Razif said that he would not mind playing again against his brother.
“It was unfortunate that we had to face each other in the second round itself, but it was a good match. As an experienced player, I know that although he is my brother, we treat each other as opponents on court and once the game is over, we are back to being siblings and that’s the beauty of sports,” said Razif.
As for Hafizi, he has always looked forward to play against his elder brother.
Since our age gap is quite big, I never really had the chance to play with Hafiz, hence, I appreciate every opportunity I get and he has also been my role model since I was a kid” added Hafizi.
The match was eventually won by Zakry and Hafizi and they face Lim Khim Wah/ Ong Jian Guo in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
in the men’s singles Division 1 category, in the absence of top national players like Lee Chong Wei and Iskandar who will be competing in the Indonesia Open Superseries next week, the field is wide open as they are quite a number of players who are expected to go far in this tournament.
The title contenders will most likely be Zulfadli Zulkifli, Chong Wei Feng, Goh Soon Huat and 2015 SEA Games runner-up, Mohd Arif Latif
