It was yet another sensational performance by top women’s doubles pair, Vivian Hoo/ Woon Khe Wei who stormed in to the last four of the Indonesia Open Superseries Premier in Jakara today. It was the pair’s third victory over the Indonesians, Anggia Shitta Awanda/Mahadewi Istirani, the last two being played early last year.
Vivian/Khe Wei were almost stretched to a third game when they led the match 20-15 before allowing their opponents to chase up to 19-20 creating yet another tensed situation. However, the 2014 Commonwealth champions managed to wrap up the game 21-19 and seal victory to check into the semi-finals where they face third seeds, Tang Yuanting/Yu Yang tomorrow.
We were beginning to get worried when Anggia/Mahadewi started chasing from 15-20 but Vivian and I were determined to win the match and at the same time, we knew that we had to stay calm and handle the pressure as the local fans were really showing their full support for their players.
It’s a great feeling to have come thus far in the tournament as the last few tournaments have not been a very good outing for us crashing out in the early rounds. Although tomorrow is going to be a tough match against Yuanting/Yu Yang, Vivian and I will surely give our best and make sure that we’re in the best condition,” said the delighted Khe Wei after their match.
National No.1 Lee Chong Wei was through to the semis after defeating Wang Zhengming of China, 21-16 before receiving a walkover from the Chinese in the second game. He will next face Indonesian youngster, Ihsan Maulana Mustofa in the last four. It was however the end of the road for men’s doubles pair, Wee Kiong/V Shem when the pair were defeated by Chai Biao/Hong Wei, 21/18, 21/17.
