National No. 2 men’s singles, Soong Joo Ven sealed his first international title in Ipoh, this evening.

In an all-Malaysian final, Joo Ven overcame teammate, Cheam June Wei 21-13 22-20 in a thrilling VICTOR Malaysia International Series (VMIS) final at a packed Arena Badminton Perak.

The victory marked his first success after defeats in 2015 Malaysia International, 2016 Scottish Open, 2017 Polish International and 2018 Hyderabad Open.

“I’m very happy to have won after such a long time,” Joo Ven said to BAM TV.

“Second set was a bit tough (against Cheam), as he continued to pressure me on court, I made a lot of silly mistakes.

“The next step is to work harder to improve my rankings in the upcoming tournaments.”

In the women’s doubles, promising new pair, M Thinaah-Pearly Tan proved their mettle with a winning debut against Indonesia’s Febriana Kusuma-Ribka Sugiarto in an emotionally charged final 21-16 11-21 21-18.

The win was also Thinaah’s second consecutive International Series title after first winning it in Penang with Lim Peiy Yee last year.
