The first day at the SCG Thailand open seemed gloomy for Malaysia when mens’ singles players, Wei Feng and Daren were defeated by their opponents from Indonesia and Thailand respectively. Wei Feng was unable to give a good fight in both games to Simon Santoso losing the match, 4/21, 15/21. Although Wei Feng has never beaten the Indonesian in their previous two meetings, he was not expected to give in so easily today.
On the other hand, Simon who once had a career best of being ranked third in the world is not giving up his hope of qualifying for the Rio Olympics next year. Despite having a very disappointing outing this year, the 30 year-old is hoping to make a come back in Thailand. As for Wei Feng, he has to stay focus as it is still not too late yet.
Wei Feng was not the only casualty as Daren had to go through the same fate. However, his defeat came as a surprise as his opponent, Mek Narongrit is a junior who is ranked 261 compared to the former who is currently ranked 108 in the world. Daren lost the match in three games, 21/18, 21/23, 21/23 dashing his hopes of doing well in Thailand. His best results this year was winning the Yonex Polish International Challenge back in March.
