Malaysia defeated Korea 3-2 in one of the most exciting matches to top Group C at the Thomas/ Uber Cup in Kunshan, China, hence making it to the quarter-finals. Chong Wei Feng who played the third singles became the hero of the day sealing the victory point in the deciding match against Jeon Hyeok Jin.
The Kedahan who was also part of the Thomas Cup team two years ago proved that although his performance this year may not have been very convincing, his experience and mental strength was the key to helping Malaysia top the group.
Lee Chong Wei did not fail to thrill the crowd with his impressive performance defeating Son Wan Ho, 21-18, 21-15. However, the scratch pair of Koo Kien Keat/ Goh V Shem was edged by world No.1, Lee Yong Dae/ Yoo Yeon Seong 16-21, 11-21.
Then, it was national champion, Iskandar’s turn to give Malaysia the second point after creating an upset against Lee Dong Keun who is currently ranked No.16 in the world. Iskandar was seen as the dominant one on court with his rallies and never give up attitude and that paid handsomely.
Tan Wee Kiong/ Tan Boon Heong who played the second doubles did their best despite losing the match in two games. It was however a good day for the Thomas Cup team finishing as the top of the group. The team will now wait for the quarter-finals draw to be released as they will either meet Japan, Denmark, Thailand or it can be Korea again.
