WOMENS’ SINGLES SHUTTLERS ASSURE A GOLD FOR MALAYSIA

Despite being an early casualty in the Belgian Open last week, womens’ singles shuttlers, Ho Yen Mei and Lim Chiew Sien made a comeback to check into the finals of the Varcolor Polish International Series to bring back a gold for Malaysia. Yen Mei overcame Goh Jin Wei while Chiew Sien defeated Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark in the semi-finals.

As both players have played so many times against each other during training, it will be an exciting finals especially since they know each other’s style of play very well. Moreover, Yen Mei and Chiew Sien are ranked 138 and 139 in the world, hence, the match can go either way. The duo also faced each other in the first round in Belgian last week and Chiew Sien emerged as the winner.

As for Soong Joo Vern, he was forced to concede a walkover to teammate, Iskandar Zulkarnain in the second game after suffering a muscle pull at his right shoulder during his quarter-finals match against a Finnish player, Kalle Koljonen.

The pain became severe when he started his semi-finals match against Iskandar to a point where he could not play his usual game any longer. The 2013 Asian Junior runner-up lost the first game 5/21 and trailing 3-11 in the second game before he decided to retire. Iskandar will meet Anders Antonson of Denmark to clinch his second international title after the OUE Singapore Inernational Series last month.

Mixed doubles pair of Wong Fai Yin/ Chow Mei Kuan have also qualified for the finals after defeating Anton Kaisti/ Jenny Nystrom of Finland, 21/14, 21/12. They face Kasper Antonsen/ Amanda Madsen of Denmark later today. Yao Han/ Kah Ming could not make it another finals in the mens’ doubles event after failing to overcome their opponents from Denmark in the semi-final that was played early this morning.
