The second day of the PETRONAS National Under-18 Championships 2022 was a thrilling affair as several younger players surprised their better known rivals at the Selangor BA Hall.

Mohamad Al-Imran Jasni 16, who hails from SMK Tambun in Perak, qualified for the fourth round after recording a 16-21, 21-9 and 21-4 victory over Malacca's Lee Bing Cheng. He is expected to face players from the BAM Academy in the next round .

"I am very happy to advance to the fourth round. I came here with hopes of performing well. I realise challenge will only get tougher from here on,' said Al-Imran.

Kuala Lumpur's Tae Ern Ong also advanced to the fourth round, defeating Irfan Mikhail Mashafez of Pahang 21-8, 21-14.

Topseed Eugene Eon Ewe came through a grueling session against Tan Kian Wei of Penang to win 21-11, 19-21, 21-15 in a 40-minute battle today.

In women's singles, Sabah's Casey Ryan Rompog and Selangor's Reesha Kumaresan were close to tears. Casey, 16, from SMK St John in Tuaran, surprised BAM's Noraqilah Ramadan Maisarah 21-16, 21-12.

"I am so excited with this win. I did not expect to go beyond the second round as the competition is tough," said Casey.

Reesha, 15 impressed with a three-set victory over Nur Aina Maisarah Hatta from Perak in the third round today. She won 16-21, 21-9, 21-6.

Overall, it was smooth sailing for most of the BAM players as they made it to the third and fourth rounds. The competition will get more intense from tomorrow onwards as the players battle to get ahead of their rivals.
