V Poopathi served up a surprise when he defeated topseed Eogene Ewe Eon's in the @PETRONAS National Under-18 Championships 2022 at the BA of Selangor Hall in Kg Attap today.

The 17-year-old seeded 5-8th signalled his intentions by securing a thrilling 21-11, 10-21, 24-22 victory in the quarterfinals. The massive battle lasted just over an hour.

In the deciding set, Eogene who clawed back from 18-20 down to draw level 20-20. He however suffered cramps in both legs but continued fighting on, battling for every shot. Eogene eventually lost out to the tenacity of his opponent who is also his teammate of the BAM development programme.

“This was the toughest match in this tournament for me. Eogene has always been a strong player," said an elated Poopathi.

"It will only get harder in the semifinals and I need all the rest to focus on my game."

In Sunday's semifinals, Poopathi will play third seed Lee Jan Jireh, also from BAM, while Mohd Zakaria Mohd Ariifin will go into a showdown against Soh Ping Chuan.

In the quarterfinals, Jan Jireh defeated Goh Shun Huat 21-15, 18-21, 21-19 while Ping Chuan beat Sie Zi Lok 21-18, 21-17.

In the Girls singles quarterfinals today, topseed BAM's Ong Xin Yee defeated Clarissa Yee Wan San 21-6, 21-15 to set up a semifinals showdown with

Siti Zulaikha who scored an inspiring 21-17, 21-13 win over third seed Ung Xi Xing.

The other semifinal will be between Johor’s Dania Sofea Zaidi and Selangor's Eng Ler Qi. Dania defeated Carmen Ting 21-12, 21-12.

Ler Qi defeated third seeded Chan Wen Tse 21-18, 21-14.

In the men's doubles quarterfinals, topseeds Choi Jian Sheng-Bryan Jeremy Goonting defeated Goh Yi Qin-Wong Zhi Kang, both from BAM, 21-18, 24-22.

In the women doubles quarterfinals, second seeds Siti Zulaikha-Chan Wen Tse defeated Lim Yi Wei-Lily Wong 21-18, 22-20.
