Johor staged a stunning comeback to claim the PETRONAS National Inter-State Under-18 Mixed Team title here today. The Johoreans stormed back twice to edge Selangor 4-3 in the final.
In the battle for the bronze playoff, Perak edged Penang 4-3.
The final saw Selangor snatch the lead when Muhammad Adam Shaz battled past Wee Yee Hern in the boys singles, winning a thrilling three-setter.
Johor fought back and levelled the score at 1-1 thanks to a brilliant performance by Dania Sofea Zaidi who defeated her rival Kabilan Sharanya in half an hour.
Lily Wong-Lim Shin then led Johor ahead for the first time i the final, easing past Clarissa San-Zi Yi Wong in straight games.
Selangor however were not ready to give up the fight and charged back to put the score at 2-2 when Jin Yao Pang took control of his match against Amirul Imran Azuan.
Things were looking up for Selangor fifth tie of the final as Muhammad Faiq-Hong Quan Lok took 45 minutes to down their hardworking opponents Goh Shao Tang-Wee Yee Tern. Selangor were 3-1 up and looking at wrapping up the title.
Johor were not ready to throw in the towel and gave it their all in the remaining two ties. Lim Shin, in the second girls singles tie, threw everything she had in the game against Ler Qi Eng. Lim Shin gave Johor hope and levelled off at 3-3, forcing the game into the decider.
Wee Yee Hern-Dania Sofea stepped up and stole the show against Kai Hern Huan-Zi Yi Wong to sensationally deliver the gold medal to Johor.
