Malaysia made a strong statement in their opening Group C tie at the Sudirman Cup 2025, sweeping France 5-0 in a commanding performance in Xiamen, China.
The tie began on a strong note for Malaysia as men's doubles duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani made quick work of Mael Cattoen-Lucas Renoir, cruising to a 21-11, 21-9 win to hand Malaysia the opening point.
In the women’s singles, Goh Jin Wei extended Malaysia’s advantage with a confident 21-10, 21-19 victory over Leonice Huet, displaying both composure and control.
The winning point was then secured in the men’s singles, where World No. 26 Leong Jun Hao delivered under pressure with a gritty 22-20, 21-19 win over Arnaud Merkle in a closely fought 55-minute battle.
Having secured victory by winning the first three matches, the national squad kept the momentum going as Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie delivered the finishing touches in the final two rubbers.
Pearly-Thinaah were in complete control as they eased past Margot Lambert-Camille Pognante 21-13, 21-10 in the women’s doubles. That was followed by an emphatic 21-7, 21-9 victory from Soon Huat-Shevon over Gregoire Deschamp-Elsa Jacob in the mixed doubles to complete the whitewash.
The dominant win sets a confident tone for Malaysia, who are eyeing another podium finish after consecutive bronze medal achievements in 2021 (Vantaa, Finland) and 2023 (Suzhou, China).
