Several events got underway simultaneously on the opening day of the individual competition, with only three Malaysian representatives securing their places in the second round.

K. Letshanaa bowed out in the Round of 64 after falling to World No. 17 Chiu Pin-Chian of Taipei in identical 13-21 scorelines, trailing 1-2 in their head-to-head record.

In mixed doubles, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai opened their campaign with a straight-sets victory over Chinese Taipei’s Yang Po Hsuan-Hu Ling Fang, maintaining their perfect record in all six meetings, 21-14, 21-11.

However, Goh-Shevon were denied a quarter-finals berth in Ichinomiya after suffering a narrow straight-sets defeat to India’s Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto, with both games decided at deuce, 20-22, 22-24.

The same fate befell Chen Tang Jie-Cheng Su Yin, who comfortably saw off Bangladesh’s Jumar Al-Amin-Urmi Akter 21-14, 21-9 in the Round of 32, but fell to Korea’s Kim Jae Hyeon-Jang Ha Jeong in the Round of 16 despite saving four match points while trailing 16-20 in the second game.

Battling through a gruelling deciding game, Tang Jie-Su Yin eventually fell short of securing a spot in the last eight, losing 16-21, 22-20, 19-21.

Meanwhile, in men’s doubles, Aaron Chia-Tee Kai Wun needed just 18 minutes to comfortably sweep aside Tajikistan’s Odilzhon Abdurakhimov-Dzhumaboi Saidov 21-6, 21-6.

Aaron-Kai Wun is set to face a stern test against Korea’s World No. 1 Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae in the Round of 16. 

Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani also advanced after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Hsiang Chieh-Wang Chi Lin 21-17, 21-14, improving their head-to-head record to 3-1.

World No. 5 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah remained unbeaten against Indonesia’s World No. 9 Rachel Allessya Rose-Febi Setianingrum after edging out the pair to extend their H2H record to a perfect 4-0 (21-13, 21-11).

Debutants, Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan, however, were unable to clear their opening hurdle against Chinese Taipei’s World No. 12 Hsu Yin Hui-Lin Jhih Yun, falling 10-21, 13-21 to level their H2H record at 1-1.
