Malaysia’s men’s team saw their Asian Games campaign come to an end after Indonesia edged them 3-2 in a closely contested quarter-final, with the tie decided in the final men’s singles.

Leong Jun Hao gave Malaysia the perfect start, stunning World No. 1 Jonatan Christie in a three-game battle (20-22, 21-12, 21-17).

With Malaysia leading 1-0, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani failed to extend the advantage, falling to World No. 2 Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Shohibul Fikri in a fluctuating three-game encounter (15-21, 21-19, 10-21). 

The tide turned in the second men’s singles as Justin Hoh narrowly fell to World No. 10 Alwi Farhan in straight games, 19-21, 19-21, handing Indonesia a 2-1 lead.

Malaysia’s hopes were revived as Aaron Chia-Tee Kai Wun rallied from a game down to overcome Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin in a tough three games, 17-21, 21-16, 21-13, levelling the tie at 2-2.

The final showdown saw Eogene Ewe fall to Moh Zaki Ubaidillah, 11-21, 11-21, bringing Malaysia’s team event campaign to an end without securing at least a bronze medal.

Malaysia last stood on the podium in the men’s team event in 2014, claiming bronze with former World No. 1 Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei leading the squad.

The focus now shifts to the individual event, set to take place from 25 to 29 September.
