Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) youth shuttlers flexed their muscles at the VICTOR National U-18 Championships finals clinching all five titles in Alor Setar.
Goh Boon Zhe and Cheng Su Yin were the toasts of the one-sided final affair after winning two titles each. In an all-BAM encounter, Boon Zhe-Su Yin defeated second seeds and respective partners, Rayner Beh-Cheng Su Hui 21-14 21-17.
Boon Zhe then teamed up with Rayner to win the boys’ doubles crown beating Kedah state players, Mohamed Faris Mohd Roslan-Kok Jia Cheng in an energy sapping 21-16 16-21 21-12 thriller.
Su Yin on the other hand won the girls’ doubles event with Su Hui through a solid 21-17 21-15 score over Kuala Lumpur’s Odelia Wong-Hoe Shi Yun.
In the boys’ singles, unheralded 14-year-old Eogene Ewe Eon was denied a fairytale ending by his senior of two years at Bukit Jalil School (BJSS), Ong Zhen Yi losing 17-21 16-21.
Khor Jing Wen overcame the gallant efforts of her 13-year-old BJSS junior, Ong Xin Yee 21-16 21-17 to seal her maiden girls’ singles title.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS OF NATIONAL U-18 COACH, HAZWAN JAMALUDDIN
“Overall, we are satisfied with the performances of the players as we have fielded a second-string group for this tournament with the first-team players currently in Kazan for the World Junior Championships.
“We had Eogene and Xin Yee, aged 14 and 13 with second place finishes in the boys’ and girls’ singles event. They have showed potential despite their young age and we will look to give both of them more exposure in the future.
“Boon Zhe and Su Yin displayed their razor-sharp focus and consistency performing very well in two final events.”
