Malaysia emerged with a gold and silver medal of the SUPER 750 tournament, with World No. 5 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and World No. 4 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik leading the national challenge in the finals.
Each podium finish marks a distinct achievement, creating its own place in Malaysia’s badminton history.
For Pearly-Thinaah, the victory marked a historic milestone, ending Malaysia’s 18-year wait for a women’s doubles champion since Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui’s triumph in 2008.
Thinaah was pleased with her performance in the final but stressed that their next tournament is equally important.
“I’m really happy that we were able to showcase our game and play the way we wanted in today’s final. I’m really satisfied with our performance, but we still have another tournament next week, so we need to stay focused!”
Thinaah also highlighted how they focused on taking each point at a time rather than thinking about winning the match.
“At the beginning, we didn’t think too much about winning the title. Our focus was on taking it one point and one match at a time, step by step. In the end, winning the title is something we’re really happy about.”
The success added another title to their 2026 campaign, marking their second World Tour crown after winning the Indonesia Masters in January.
Pearly-Thinaah dominated their encounter against Japan’s Hinata Suzuki-Nao Yamakita, sealing 21-18, 21-11 in 36 minutes.
Reflecting on Genevie Lim-Low Zi Yu’s historic women’s doubles victory at the World Junior Championships, Thinaah expressed her happiness and hoped the achievement would inspire the young pair to reach greater heights.
“They’re great players, and I’m really happy to see them reach the final. This is a good boost for them and for our women’s doubles department as well. I hope these victories will motivate them even more. We’ll keep fighting together!”
Meanwhile, Chia-Soh’s final against Indonesia’s World No. 3 Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Shohibul Fikri evoked memories of 2023, when the Malaysians also faced Indonesian opposition in the title decider, with Fikri then partnering Bagas Maulana.
Chia-Soh were crowned champions in 2023, overcoming their Indonesian opponents in straight games.
However, they were unable to repeat the 2023 success, settling for silver after losing 8-21, 11-21 to Fajar-Fikri, trailing 2-3 in their head-to-head record.
Chia-Soh recorded their fourth podium finish together, with silver medals on all four occasions.
Pearly-Thinaah and Chia-Soh are set to resume their campaigns at the French Open, which runs from 20 to 25 October.
