PMM2022: THREE MALAYSIAN MEN'S SINGLES IN FIRST ROUND

Three Malaysian men’s singles have advanced to the first round of the PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2022 presented by Daihatsu after they each punched their way through the qualifying round which took place earlier today at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

The trio are Ng Tze Yong, Leong Jun Hao, Soong Joo Ven, had to go through two qualifying matches before advancing to the first round of the tournament.

Fast improving Tze Yong overcame compatriot Yeoh Seng Zoe, 21-12, 21-13 before beating South Korean opponent Lee Dong Keun 21-8, 21-12 in the second match.

In the first round Tze Yong, who is ranked 48th in the world, will meet Canadian Brian Yang – currently ranked 31st in the world.

On the other hand, Jun Hao was fully stretched by compatriot Cheam June Wei 16-21,21-15, 21-16 in the first match of the qualifiers before overcoming Weng Hong Yang from China, 5-21, 21- 17,21-13 in the second tie.

The 130-ranked Jun Hao, will have to be in his best in the first round tomorrow when he takes on Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen, who is ranked 23rd in the world. 

Meanwhile, Joo Ven advanced to the main draw after beating compatriot Aidil Sholeh, 14-21 21-14 21-16 in the first match and then beating Danish opponent Victor Svendsen also in rubber set, 21-9 16-21 21-10.

In the first round, Joo Ven, ranked 59th in the world, will square up against 41-ranked Li Shi Feng, from China.

Meanwhile, national women's singles Goh Jin Wei also advanced to the first round of the tournament after beating India’s Malvika Bansod 21-10 21-17.

In the main draw, Jin Wei will face Beiwen Zhang from the United States.
