In the final at the Bac Giang Gymnasium, world No 29 Tang Jie-Yen Wei clawed back from a game down to upset teammates, world No 23 Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See 15-21, 21-19, 21-13 in an all-Malaysian final.

Similarly, in Jakarta 23 years ago, Chew Choon Eng-Chor Hooi Yee defeated compatriots Rosman Razak-Norhasikin Amin to win gold.

In the last four stage, both pairs upstaged their more fancied Indonesian opponents - Tang Jie-Yen Wei fought valiantly to beat top seeds Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas 20-22, 21-13, 21-18 in a 63-minute while second seeds Pang Ron-Yee See were equally on fire as they knocked out third seeds Adnan Maulana-Mychelle Crhystine 18-21, 21-16, 21-17.

Following Tang Jie-Yen Wei's heroics, the Association reaches its' one gold target set for Hanoi SEA Games. The youthful national team finished their campaign with one gold (mixed doubles), two silver (men's team & mixed doubles) and one bronze (women's doubles).
