Malaysia secured a 3-2 victory against Taiwan in their final Group B men’s team match at the Asia Team Championships held at the Setia City Convention Center on Thursday.
The men’s singles player, Lee Zii Jia, provided a strong start by defeating world No. 21 Lin Chun-yi with a commanding score of 21-16 21-13. This win marked a sweet revenge for Zii Jia, who had previously lost to Chun-yi in their last encounter at the Malaysian Masters last year.
Despite high hopes, the national No. 1 men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik faced an unexpected setback, losing 21-23 17-21 to the scratch pairing of Lee Jhe-huei-Lee Yang.
World No. 38 Leong Jun Hao then regained the lead for Malaysia with a 21-19 21-17 victory over world No. 33 Lee Chia-hao in the second singles match.
The second doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, secured the team's overall victory by defeating the scratch combination of Wang Chi-lin-Yang Po-han with a score of 21-19 21-14.
In the third singles, 18-year-old Eogene Ewe Eon faced a defeat with a score of 16-21 14-21 against Chi Yu-jen.
With this win, Malaysia has qualified for the quarter-finals on Friday (Feb 16) as the group winners and will face Group D runners-up, Singapore.
