Malaysia made a winning start to their Sudirman Cup campaign by edging darkhorses, England 3-2 in the Group D opener at Vantaa, Finland.

World No. 27 mixed doubles pair, Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See stunned world No. 7 duo, Marcus Ellis-Lauren Smith 21-18 21-19 at the Energie Areena.

Skipper, Lee Zii Jia made it 2-0 when he brushed aside Johniee Torjussen 21-4 21-15 in just 28 minutes.

Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik then sealed the winning point through a determined display against fast-paced pair, Ben Lane-Sean Vendy 22-20 21-18.

National women's singles S Kisona slipped to a 16-21 20-22 defeat to Abigail Holden while women's doubles duo, Pearly Tan-M Thinaah lost to Lauren-Chloe Birch 18-21 21-17 10-21.

Tomorrow will see Malaysia take on Egypt at 9pm (MYT).
