Malaysia’s national junior representatives made a positive start to the individual event, with several shuttlers booking their places in the quarter-finals despite mixed fortunes in the doubles events.
In the men’s singles, Tiew Wei Jie pulled off a notable upset by defeating fourth seed Shunki Hagiwara of Japan in straight sets (21-17, 21-15).
The winning momentum continued as eighth seed Kong Wei Xiang battled to take the opening game 22-20 against Vietnam’s Tat Duy Loi Nguyen before comfortably sealing the second set 21-10.
Second seeds Ahmad Redzuan and Low Zi Yu also progressed in the mixed doubles after producing an impressive display to defeat Thailand’s Thanyathep Sanitpong and Surada Vechpanich (21-7, 21-9) in 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, fourth-seeded men's doubles pair Damien Ling and Muhammad Shazmir Irfan suffered a hard-fought defeat to Indonesia’s Joven Farandi and Joseph Marcellino Kyta (21-16, 16-21, 19-21).
Second seeds Isyraf Hafizin and Ahmad Redzuan also exited the tournament after falling to Japan’s Mahiro Oku and Masato Yamashiro (15-21, 21-23).
In the women’s singles, seventh seed Carine Tee bowed out to India’s Tanvi Patri (11-21, 7-21), while fourth-seeded women's doubles pair Genevie Lim and Low Zi Yu advanced with a straight-sets victory over Vietnam’s Thi Thu Huyen Nguyen and Thi Truc An Pham (21-11, 21-15).
Fifth-seeded pair Nur Aina Maisarah Hatta and Teh Si Yan, however, were unable to maintain their momentum, losing to Japan’s Ria Haga and Rio Yamakita in three games (21-18, 14-21, 18-21).
