The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has confirmed a strategic shake-up in the national men's doubles department, introducing fresh combinations as part of its long-term plans towards delivering Malaysia’s first Olympic badminton gold medal at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The decision was reached following extensive discussions between National Doubles Director of Coaching Rexy Mainaky, Men's Doubles Head Coach Herry Iman Pierngadi and BAM Performance Committee Chairman Dato' Seri (Dr.) Lee Chong Wei.
“We have to look ahead to 2028. That doesn’t mean Aaron and Wooi Yik no longer show promise, but instead we have to look at the number of young players we have,” said Rexy.
According to Rexy, the strategy centres on pairing experienced senior players with younger shuttlers to accelerate the development of the national second layer while broadening Malaysia’s options for the future.
Several new combinations are set to feature in upcoming tournaments, including the China Open, Taipei Open and Korea Masters. Among them, Olympic bronze medallist Aaron Chia will partner former World Junior champion Aaron Tai.

Due to ranking qualification requirements, the new pairings will not compete in Japan as initially planned, and are instead expected to make their debut at the Korea Open, Taipei Open and China Open.
Rexy added that BAM wants to move away from being overly reliant on a handful of established pairs and provide younger players with greater exposure at major international tournaments.
"This decision does not mean current permanent pairs are finished," said Rexy.
Rexy said the same approach could also be applied to the women’s doubles and mixed doubles departments if it proves beneficial.
“Why not? We should not be afraid to make changes. It’s not just an experiment but a call based on the coach’s observations and the players’ ability to adapt in both training and competition.
“If this can help players’ development and increase the country’s chances in the future, then this approach can be used for all doubles departments,” said Rexy.
