Malaysia endured mixed fortunes across several categories as their shuttlers went up against top-ranked opponents in the latest round of competition.
In the mixed doubles, World No. 3 pair Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei fell to World No. 1 duo Feng Yan Zhe–Huang Dong Ping of China in a closely fought match, losing 18–21 24–26.
Despite the defeat, Chen–Toh secured a place in the semifinals as Group B runners-up after winning their previous two matches.
However, it was the end of the road for Goh Soon Huat–Lai Shevon Jemie, who failed to advance to the semifinals following a straight-games loss 17–21 17–21 to the World No. 10 Indonesian pair Jafar Hidayatullah–Felisha Pasaribu.
In the men’s doubles, Malaysia’s World No. 4 pair Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun put up a strong challenge but eventually lost to World No. 1 Koreans Kim Won Ho–Seo Seung Jae, going down 23–25, 21–14, 19–21 in a thrilling three-game encounter.
Meanwhile, women’s doubles World No.2 pair Pearly Tan–Thinaah Muralitharan were edged out by Japan’s World No.5 duo Yuki Fukushima–Mayu Matsumoto after a gruelling three-set battle, 15–21 21–16 19–21.
Despite the loss, Pearly–Thinaah booked their spot in the semifinals as Group A winners, alongside Chen–Toh, after securing two wins earlier in the competition.
Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s doubles also saw World No. 2 pair Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik fall short against India’s World No. 3 duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy–Chirag Shetty, losing 21–17 18–21 15–21 in a hard-fought contest.
