The opening day kicked off with qualifying round clashes, as Cheng Su Hui-Tan Zhi Yang, Wong Ling Ching, and the pairing of Chong Jie Yu-Vanessa Ng successfully booked their spots in the main draw.

For the men’s doubles campaign, Malaysian Open runners-up Aaron-Wooi Yik were unable to raise their game and suffered a defeat, going down 22-20, 19-21 16-21 to Denmark World No.28 Daniel Lundgaard-Mads Vestergaard at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta.

This was followed by early exits for Chia Wei Jie-Lwi Sheng Hao, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, and Choong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri, who bowed out after suffering defeats in their respective first round matches.

However, the men’s doubles campaign came to life as Goh Sze Fei-Izzuddin Rumsani, Azryn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, along with scratch pair Choi Sol Gyu-Goh V Shem, secured their seats in the R16 after winning in straight games against their opponents.

The final men’s doubles match also provided hope, as Malaysia World No.6 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun pair delivered a consistent performance to defeat the Taipei World No.44, Chang Ko Chi-Po Li Wei pair in under an hour, winning 21-13 21-6.

The women’s doubles campaign saw only two pairs progressing, after Malaysia World No.2 Pearly Tan-Thinaah Muralitharan overcame the American World No.36 pair Francesca Corbett-Jennie Gai in a rubber-set battle, 21-15 20-22 21-19.

This was followed by Malaysia World No.75 Cheng Su Hui-Tan Zhing Yi, who caused an upset by toppling the higher-ranked Denmark World No.74 pair Katherine Vang-Mette Werge, winning 22-20 21-13.

Meanwhile, Chong Jie Yu-Vanessa Ng, who had secured a spot in the main draw, were forced to accept defeat after losing to the Hong Kong pair Tsang Hiu Yan-Yeung Pui Lam, 16-21 10-21. 

Malaysia World No.25 pair also bowed out after falling to the sixth seeded Japanese duo Kaho Osawa-Mai Tanabe in straight games, 19-21 18-21.

Action continues tomorrow, with eight Malaysian representatives set to battle for places in the R16.
