After five days of intense action, Eogene Ewe Eon and Siti Nurshuhaini Azman emerged the boys’ and girls’ singles Group A winners in the Internal Junior Ranking competition organised by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
Eogene won his last group match today to seal the top spot in the group while Justin Hoh had to settle for second despite also winning his game today. Eogene recorded a 21-14, 21-18 win over Chua Kim Sheng while Justin defeated V. Poopathi 21-10, 21-14.
Both players were tied at five points each but Eogene was the group winner as he had won the head-to-head tie between the two players.
“I am satisfied with my performance as I managed to play bring out my best game today. In my match against Justin the other day, I think he was under pressure,” Eogene said.
“I will step up my training after this competition, look forward and prepare for the various competitions where I will do my best.”
In the other Group A match this morning, Chia Jeng Hong defeated Mohd Fazriq 11-21,21-10, 21-11.
In Group B, Anson Cheong ended the tournament as the group winner with Jan Jireh Lee and Rex Hooi Shao Herng finishing behind him. Anson downed Dylan Ooi 21-19, 22-20 while Rex swept past Muhd Adam Shaz 21-5, 21-8. Lok Hong Quan wound up his campaign with a 18-21, 21-16, 21-12 win over Low Han Chen.
In the girls’ singles, Siti Nurshuhaini confirmed her number one spot in Group A after beating her rival Tan Zhing Yi 16-21, 21-15, 21-9.
“In the first set, I was not warmed up and had some difficulty. But I recovered in the second, improved and quickened the game.”
“I am delighted after finishing at the top of the group and I was also pleased with the coach’s feedback that I had shown much improvement,” Siti Nurshuhaini commented.
Despite failing to win, Zhing Yi was satisfied with her overall form during the tournament.
“I am happy and satisfied as I did not make many errors, I was not under pressure this time compared to last year.”
In Group B, Siti Zulaikha Muhd Azmi completed her matches unbeaten in all five matches including today’s game against Lai Ting Cen which she won 21-11, 21-15.
“It was good for me but I need to improve my physical strength and stamina,” Siti Zulaikha admitted.
Carmen Ting finished second in the group after defeating Oo Shan Zi 21-11, 21-12.
Meanwhile, Tan Zhing Hui managed a 100 percent record by winning all her five Group C matches to claim the top spot in the group ahead of Chong Jie Yu in second.
For the playoffs at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) next week, 12 boys and 8 girls will compete to determine their rankings.
