The Malaysian badminton squad continued their impressive performance on the third day of the 2024 Paris Olympics, with the mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei securing a significant victory.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei triumphed over China's world number two pair Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping in a thrilling three-set match that ended 17-21 21-15 21-16. The encounter, lasting over an hour, marked a morale-boosting win for the Malaysian duo.
Earlier in the weekend, Tang Jie-Ee Wei had convincingly defeated Singapore's Terry Hee-Jessica Tan and the United States' Vinson Chiu-Jennie Gai in straight sets at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.
The quarterfinals draw held today pits Tang Jie-Ee Wei against South Korea’s world number eight pair, Kim Won Ho-Jeong Na Eun, providing a promising path to the semifinals by avoiding the top-seeded Chinese pairs.
In addition to the mixed doubles success, former world junior champion Goh Jin Wei carried the positive momentum into the women’s singles Group H match. The 24-year-old made her Olympic debut with a 23-21 21-11 victory over South Africa's Johanita Scholtz, ranked 103rd globally.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who have already secured a spot in the quarterfinals, faced a setback in their final Group A match, losing to China’s top seeds Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang 22-24 14-21.
