Pearly Tan and M Thinaah made history by becoming Malaysia’s first women’s doubles pair to reach the semi-finals at the Olympics. They delivered an outstanding performance, defeating South Korea's Kim So-young and Kong Hee-yong 21-12, 21-13 in just 39 minutes at the Adidas Arena in Port de la Chapelle.
Previously, Vivian Hoo and Woon Khe Wei had reached the quarter-final stage in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics but were defeated by Japan’s eventual gold medallists Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi.
In men's doubles, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty of India. Aaron and Wooi Yik rallied from a set down to secure a 13-21 21-14 21-16 victory in 59 minutes, earning their place in the semi-finals.
Lee Zii Jia advanced to the men's singles quarter-finals for the first time at the Olympic Games. The Kedah-born shuttler overcame a late challenge from France's giant-killer Toma Junior Popov, winning 21-13 24-22 in the last 16 stage at the Adidas Arena in Port de la Chapelle.
