The finals of the PETRONAS National Championships 2025 ended with Wee Yee Tern–Clarissa San defeating their teammates Tan Zhi Yang-Nicole Tan Pei En 24-22 19-21 21-17 in almost 1 hour and 18 minutes, marking the start of today’s final matches.

“Today, of course we are happy because this is our first final and we became the champions as we have been trying to improve our communication and focus on court, and it feels really great that we managed to let go of all the pressure and stress,” said Yee Tern.

Communication on court has been key to their success, especially during crucial moments, and they constantly remind each other to stay focused.

“For us, the key to our success is that we always remind each other, communicate a lot so we understand each other’s movements, and maintain our gameplay so that way, we’re always there to support each other and do our best, as this was our last tournament together,” said Clarissa.

They also thanked their supporters, especially their families, friends and coaches, as this might be their last tournament together before pairing with new partners.

In the women’s singles category, Shaneesha Shahidi claimed victory after defeating Teoh Sue Mei in the third set.

It was a memorable experience for Shaneesha, as she avenged her previous defeat against Teoh Sue Mei at the PETRONAS National U21.

“I was nervous for today’s match as it felt tougher because I was playing against a fast and agile opponent, which made the game even more intense,” she said.

“Maybe after this I need to focus on making my footwork faster and more agile because my opponent was really quick because every time I played a lob, she seemed to read my strategy and attacked the front. So I definitely need to be faster next time,” she added.

Sue Mei, however, saw the match as a test of her determination, refusing to give up despite experiencing cramps that affected her performance.

“When I was playing just now and started feeling the pain, I felt that I had to keep fighting because I had already come this far, and I wasn’t going to let my opponent win easily  that make me did not give up and kept pushing until the very last point,” explained Teoh.

In the women’s doubles category, Low Zi Yu–Aina Hatta fell short against former national players Lee Xin Jie–Low Yeen Yuan from Penang and Negeri Sembilan, losing 21-17 18-21 12-21 after an intense three-set battle.

“Maybe today’s game was not good enough for us because we lost a lot of focus in the second set and made too many simple mistakes meanwhile our opponents were more focused, and their strategy was stronger as well,” said Zi Yu, 15.

As the youngest women’s doubles pair in this tournament, Aina (17) felt that their performance was still at a satisfactory level, even though there is still much to improve to ensure they can go further.

“To be honest, today was not really a good game for us because we did not achieve what we wanted, especially since this is quite a big tournament. But we did give our best and followed our usual gameplay strategy on court.

“We still need to improve a lot in terms of focus and patience, especially on court, so we don’t panic and can enjoy playing like usual. If possible, I want us to keep our fighting spirit and not give up,” added Aina.
